More good news for mental health rights advocates

March 1, 2010

Apparently the case of Dallas Obanion had a very good outcome. Another win f0r autistic advocates and our allies….I’m sure someone has blogged about it elsewhere; when we find material on the case we’ll update this post to include it.

Here’s some more good news: this time for folks with “severe” mental illnesses in the state of New York (in quotations not to take away from veracity of situation or whatever, but not everyone with a mental illness believes it’s really that severe. I’m writing to try and include their pov’s in my entry.)

This is an ongoing effort, which started in the 1960’s, to stop warehousing people with mental illnesses in large institutions, and instead help them live in their own homes, or in small group settings, within the outside community.

Kudos to the judge who ruled justly and fairly in this case.
