Prospective Pet Owners: here’s something to think about

February 22, 2010

We volunteer at the city animal shelter where we live. There are lots of animals there waiting to find homes. Not all of them will. While tag surfing, we came across a very well-written post about this very issue. Here it is. Please read it, especially if you have not completely made up your mind about where to get an animal from. Shelters all across the country are waiting and hoping to find loving homes. If enough people stop showing interest in puppies bred in puppy mills, they’ll eventually go out of business.

Also: remember to spay and neuter your pets, ESPECIALLY if they are allowed outside for ANY period of time. They can and will have sex. It’s what they do.

  1. We always go to the shelter. They are the best dogs. Funny, but our shelter dogs have been purebreds, a beautiful Brittany and our gentle Marie, a beagle.

You will know the dog you need when you see it. Don’t ask me how it happens. If you go and you don’t see it, come back another time.

  2. Rose: that’s great, glad to hear it. Yes, shelters certainly DO get purebreds….

So for anyone who wants a purebred animal: don’t write off shelters! Be patient and keep looking.

I’ve seen a Weimarainer….(sp?) Siamese cats……at least one Maine Coon…….at the shelter I volunteer at

  3. Hi, please don’t post this as a comment. I just couldn’t find your e-addy and wanted to find out how to submit a blog post for your upcoming carnival about stereotypes. Deadline? E-addy?
My blog is dedicated to my service dog, btw, whom I found through breed rescue (another way to rescue if you want a purebred) which is why I thought I’d respond here. 🙂 Thanks!

I read your entry, its wonderful, I found it at Penny’s blog and I’ll put it up when I get a chance.
I guess Ivan forgot to tell the rest of us that we were gonna host this month’s DBC….but don’t worry, we’ll get it done. Thanks for contributing and I’m glad Ivan’s theme inspired you to write something for it!
